Readings: This essay requires a total of three texts. You may choose one or two from the list below, and then you should identify an outside text. The outside text can be a book (fiction or nonfiction), an article, an essay, a movie, a documentary, a song, or a poem. Note: If you choose two course texts, then you should find one outside text. If you choose one course text, then you should find two outside texts. -Bradbury “The Pedestrian -Thoreau “Solitude” -Jewett “A White Heron” -Howells “Editha” For your first paper, you used two readings to make an argument about a common theme that they raised. For your second paper I’d like you to bring three readings together to make an argument about important issue that is raised in the texts. For this assignment, you might begin to think carefully about a real world issue that is raised in the text and/or potential ethical issues or questions that you could explore. For example, you might consider the ways in which a specific form of technology has impacted the way that people connect (or not) with each other and/or with nature. Or you might consider the impact that war has an individual and/or their family. There are a lot of different directions that you could explore in your paper, but you want to make sure that your essay includes a thesis that makes an argument about the issue. Criteria for a successful essay include: A title that captures the essence of your essay Well-developed introduction Clear thesis statement in the introduction Well-developed support for your argument (weave in quotes and analyze them) Logical organization with topic sentences and transitions Conclusion that adds a final thought Few sentence-level errors (grammar, spelling) MLA citation
