1) 4-5 page paper 2) 3 slides containing pictures of a mixed-use building (WTC, 30, 55 Hudson Yards in New York City, The Shard in London, etc.) This is not a presentation this more of a picture collage. The professor loves building layouts and design, if you can show how form meets function it’ll go a long way to helping me. Instructions for the paper: Choose a mixed-use development project (containing two or more uses). You should select a project to study that you find architecturally compelling, either because of its design, mix of uses, and/or siting, or because of its architect or developer. There are many interrelated aspects to a development project, e.g., finance, legal, etc. In this final project you are to focus on the physical form of the development. This project should NOT be a traditional case study of a development project. I want you to investigate how the different uses come together within the form of development. I want you to draw upon the material that we are discussing in class. For example, how did the developer/architect overcome the challenges of stacking retail, parking, hotel, and residential uses in one high-rise structure? Address how the design adds (or doesn’t add) value to the real estate development. You must do original research and are strongly encouraged to visit the development if possible. Through primary and secondary sources you are expected to examine, understand, and interpret the physical form of the development. You should consider orientation, access, and types and uses of space. Your analysis should focus on the overall design concept—you may choose to focus on select features of the design that are of particular interest to you. You may include images created by others in your final project; however, you a strongly encouraged to create original drawings/diagrams and photos whenever possible. Grading weight will be placed on your original analysis. Your final project should be 1,000 – 1,250 words (4 – 5 pages, 12 pt., double spaced) and include abundant images.
